Post-Divorce Nutrition and
Self-Care Coaching Process

The 8-Step Post-Divorce Dietitian process crystallizes how divorce has impacted:

  • overall self-care and health

  • coping and emotional eating

  • body attunement and trust

  • body image and concerns

  • intake and appetite

  • schedule and routine

  • dieting behaviors or urge to restrict

  • meal planning

  • the food relationship


We work collaboratively over a period of 2 months or more (depending on needs) to find sustainable solutions that are grounded in joy, ease, satisfaction, and self-compassion.

Increase knowledge and awareness around values and where you’d like to be, how to get there, and what’s in the way.

Get to know body cues, food relationship, and build body trust.

Explore and create a meaningful routine and eating pattern.

STEP FIVE/ COPE

Manage stress and emotional eating concerns with adaptive coping.

STEP SIX/ IDENTIFY

Collaborate and find a satisfying and sustainable nutrition approach

STEP SEVEN/ DEVELOP

A realistic and functional meal planning system.

STEP EIGHT/ SOLVE

Problem solve and support ongoing goals.

Person-centered Approach

Not everyone will need to work through each step. If some steps don't apply to a client, then we work through the steps that are helpful and relevant. Also, the steps may be worked through in a different order, depending on what is most initially important, as Joanna has a person-centered approach that recognizes the unique needs of each client and pivots toward them with an intuitive, collaborative therapeutic approach. The steps offer a framework, however, to guide the coaching or nutrition therapy process. 

Goals of 8-Step Process

  • Connect to inner body wisdom and cultivate trust in body cues (such as hunger, fullness, fatigue)

  • Increase awareness in how emotions are showing up and how this impacts self-care and coping

  • Find flexibility in self-care and reject unrealistic expectations and rigidity 

  • Heal body image concerns

  • Connect to values to drive goals and behavior changes

  • Find self-compassion and gentleness and quiet inner critic voices

  • Demystify any historical lack of follow through on value-aligned behaviors and understand history and forces impacting intake and habits

  • Find supportive nutrition plan that addresses health concerns, hormonal changes, and overall well-being

  • Understand emotionality or psychological processes that drive current unwanted behaviors (normalized overeating, emotional eating, haphazard eating, chronic dieting or restriction, lack of meal planning, food anxiety, guilt, body complaints, confusion around what to eat, etc.) and a plan to address these unwanted behaviors

  • Find sustainable meal planning system

  • Problems solve how current circumstances, relationships, demands, and responsibilities inhibit or impact us and how to prioritize self-care to find a place of resilience and vitality
